For 17 years, the Upper West Region of Ghana has not had any representative in the nation’s topmost league (the Premier League which evolved from the previously named First Division League).
Wa All Stars was formed in January 2006 as a vehicle to provide Wa and its environs with a Premiership team.
Prior to the formation of Wa All Stars, there had been a number of First Division Clubs in the region notably Freedom Stars, Veterans and Wa United.
Wa All Stars is an amalgam of all these clubs and has come to represent the face of football in Wa, the capital town of the Upper West Region of Ghana.
Some notable players produced by the region over the years are Maxwell Konadu (who played for Ghana’s Olympic team), Nuru Ahmed (who played for Kumasi Asante Kotoko, one of Ghana’s two biggest clubs), Julius Dery (who played for the senior national football team, the Black Stars) and Sadat Bukari (who is currently a key striker and member of Ghana’s Olympic team).
Upper West Heroes, a regional team, once played in the then First Division League but, regrettably got demoted to the Second Division.
The people of the region have been yearning for a return of top flight football to the Upper West Region but this desire has been a mirage until this year when Wa All Stars qualified to play in next year’s Premier League.

The club has a support base of some thirty thousand (30,000) passionate supporters.
